I'm Tom Hart, and I edit The Best Pint. My job is knowing which pubs are worth your evening in 8 UK and Irish cities, and being able to tell you why.

What I do

For every city, I go through everything that's been written about its pubs recently. The newspaper lists, the awards, the CAMRA guides, and the Reddit threads where locals argue about where to drink. A pub makes my list when several of them agree on it, not because one writer had a good night there. Then I tell you what each one is actually good for, a proper pint of Harvey's, a fire in winter, a garden that gets the sun.

I care most about the pint itself. Which pubs keep their Guinness well, which ones are known for cask, and what a pint actually costs. I'm building that out city by city.

What I've learned doing it

The story a pub tells about itself is often the least reliable thing about it. Most of London's "oldest pubs" are on old sites with much newer buildings, and England's best-known claims to be the oldest pub don't stand up to the archaeology. One guide to the Bermondsey Beer Mile, updated in September 2026, still sends you to five taprooms that have shut. So I check, and every page shows you where its facts came from.

I'll tell you when locals think a place has gone downhill or turned into a tourist trap, and who said so. And nobody can pay to get onto one of my lists.

Get in touch

If a pub's closed, changed hands or I've got something wrong, tell me. Same if you know what a pint costs somewhere. It's tom@thebestpint.com. How the rankings work is set out on how we rank.
